Reports from the Front and Sunday afternoon
This just out- one of two reports from neutral sources on the situation in Iraq. And tonight, the daily paper echoes in my head- pointing out that Oregon's National Guard has taken a disproportionate number of casualties. The guys quoted- over there- say the IEDs and the threat get more sophisticated all the time. The need for a plan to solve having our forces be the arbiter of what happens and to salve the growing anger at 'occupation' is getting painfully apparent.
Of the two reports "The more substantial one is from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
It concluded: "Two months after the United States transferred sovereignty to an Iraqi interim government... Iraq remains embroiled in an insurgency, with security problems overshadowing other efforts to rebuild Iraq's fragile society in the areas of governance and participation, economic opportunity, services and well-being." (BBC online)
This gray Sunday, I had the luxury of making coffeecake. Since Kaeli leaves for college this week, I felt like some gesture from her childhood was called for. She went and walked with her mom at Race for the Cure. I played soccer this afternoon.
The lovely basics of daily life. Last night Kaeli and I were preparing dinner while waiting for Mary and Alecia. We were cutting and dicing and talking as the light faded away. The smells of cooking food- rosemary, olive oil, garlic- filled the air.
I felt so blessed to have that time. Cooking and eating together as social activities are the best....the best.
So. Time to go again....Oh yeah. We won our game. Beat Jimmy O's 4-2. We earned it.
