US 2 and Spain Nil
Not much more that can be said. I think it was the most intense match I've seen in years. The fluid, diverse, precisely executed attack of the Spanish matched by the dogged, all out defense of the Americans. The clock seeming to tick away slowly because it seemed that this taut struggle could not stay in balance. And it did not. With Altidore's muscular turn at the top of the box, carrying ball and defender with him, crashing a shot that ticked the keeper's glove and sailed into the net, everything seemed suddenly unhinged. The US might be able to hold. Or at least eke out a tie. The Spanish would redouble their probes around the box and surely something would crash in. Then the second half began and the Americans were backed into their own end almost without a break. And yet the European champs in crimson could not break down the defense. And, as the clock ticked on, the gong was struck again. Donovan, on a rare American foray against Spain's defense , slotted a low hard cross which, on ricochets, ended close enough to Dempsey that he too could muscle his way around and slam the final nail into Spain's coffin. What a match! And I am reminded that our crew, the American guys, have the potential to do it all if they can play with that passion and consistency. The match was one for the book of legends. Regardless of what happens on Sunday against Brazil. I think our team can look forward to next year's return to South Africa with fire in their eye and high expectations. I intend to be watching.
