Fireproofing your pillows and lead in your toys

Listening to a radio discussion (OPB Think Out Loud) this morning,  I was astonished and saddened to hear several things that made me frustrated and cranky.   Apparently the vast majority of pillows and perhaps other bedding sold in the US is treated with fireproofing,  a step one would think is great for consumers until hearing that the flame retardant chemicals are known neurotoxins.   So the unwitting consumer may well be putting his or her head on a highly dangerous chemically treated surface and breathing in its vapors eight hours a night.   I was also dismayed to hear that,  after all the talk about toys with lead and dangerous components,   they are being banned,  except that those which are all in the supply chain and already on the market are being allowed to be sold.   Where is the consumer protection there?
