Palin pregnancy political problem

The announcement that Sarah Palin's daughter is pregnant and unwed has been a steady topic on the airwaves today. I was thrilled to hear Barack Obama's quote stating the candidates' families and particularly their children should be off-limits. That was the right response; I don't think the Palin family's issue in this regard have any significance in the political dialogue going on right now. In fact, I think insisting that it be a topic in the media is potentially a serious political problem, not for the Republican ticket, but for Democrats. The Palin family doesn't sound that much different than my family or millions of other ordinary American families. Our children don't always do what we'd like. For most of us, the family makes the decision to gather 'round and support the child even when they don't support the behavior. That's a strong American "family value" and a good one. Putting the Palins under scrutiny over this issue risks riling up lots of folks who can easily identify with being in that situation. The discussion takes the focus away from Sarah Palin and her limited experience in governmental arenas as well as her personal political positions. Did she support Ted Stevens bridge to nowhere at some point? Did she use her gubernatorial authority to fiddle with the state police hiring and firing related to her sister's ex-husband? Those are real issues and deserve attention and discussion.
