April Fool's weekend...
I'm going to take a stab at a GENERAL PRINCIPAL. PORTER'S PREMISE. I am doing this following a business section article about the demise of bees followed by a national news article about how the overharvesting of Atlantic sharks has unleashed predators down the food chain who are scarfing up oysters and other delicacies we like.
What is this PREMISE? Pause....while I think about how to express it. If a human community has the ability and opportunity to collect, harvest, consume an unlimited amount of anything, it will always do so on the basis that no proof exists that doing so is bad. The result will inevitably be one or more negative consequences which were not anticipated at all when the decision was made.
I don't know if such a Premise is helpful, but there it is.
